Nuclear weapons have received a great deal of coverage including attempts to reduce their numbers and the gathering of 50 world leaders and nations in Washington in mid April 2010.  Here is a valuable summary article from the Age Newspaper:

In Prague in early April, the US and Russian presidents moved global disarmament efforts a small step forward by signing a new bilateral nuclear arms reduction treaty. The so-called New Start treaty limits the two countries' arsenals to 1550 deployed warheads each. While the commitments are modest, the pact is a step in the right direction.

But civil society is demanding much more. We believe it is time to move beyond arms control, and focus squarely on outlawing and eliminating nuclear weapons once and for all. With the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty review conference just weeks away, now is a crucial time to act for abolition. Together we can help to fast-track the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world.

In Germany, a group representing 58,000 physicists has just called for governments to “take the historical opportunity to start negotiations on a Nuclear Weapons Convention for the prohibition and the gradual, verifiable, irreversible, and transparent elimination of all nuclear weapons”.

Japanese campaigners have collected more than six million petition signatures supporting a nuclear abolition treaty. And hundreds of Belgian activists were recently arrested for challenging their government's policy of keeping US nuclear weapons on their territory.
