Presenters include:
Monica Ferrie ‐ Senior Project Officer , DPCD
Dr Helen Hill ‐ Senior Lecturer, Victoria University
Richard Brown ‐ Chair, VLGA Timor‐Leste Working Group
Andrew Rowe ‐ Councillor Development Officer, MAV
Chris Adams ‐ Former AVI Volunteer, Aileu
We also hope to have a telephone hook‐up with a Senior Timor‐Leste Government Official to provide direct advice on the local government elections. Issues to be discussed include:
- What the municipalities will look like & their functions
- Role of elected officials and Mayor
- Role of Friendship Groups and local governments in supporting the new municipalities in areas such as governance
- Training for local municipal officials in Timor‐Leste
- Australian election observers
While not all of the enabling legislation has yet been passed by the Timor‐Leste National Parliament, it is
vital that Friendship Groups, and Australian local governments associated with Friendship Groups, begin thinking about how they can best support and assist their Timor‐Leste counterparts during this important
process.
