Poor Christmas Gift for Local Communities

Victorian Local Governance Association President, Cr Sebastian Klein, said that today's announcement of a 2 per cent rate cap was a poor Christmas gift for local communities.

"The State Government today has again hit local communities in the lead up to Christmas," Cr Klein said

Cr Klein said that a 2 per cent rate cap would likely mean a further rationalisation of services and add pressure on Council infrastructure spending and asset renewal.

"Local Government has little choice but to pass this squeeze onto local residents. The reality is that the State Government continues to rely on populist policy rather than genuine sector reform.

"And all at a time when the State Government itself is raising taxes and adding to its own wages bill."
