Deliberative Democracy Hub

The Victorian Local Governance Association (VLGA)'s Deliberative Democracy Hub offers information and resources on deliberative democracy methods and their use in local government.

Community engagement is an important part of the good and democratic governance of local government and Victorian councils have been leaders in the constant challenge to adapt and find new ways to engage meaningfully with their communities. In this respect, deliberative approaches have been getting a lot of attention.

Deliberative approaches lend themselves well to the treatment of complex issues, such as those surrounding priority setting for a council budget. Here, you will find some introductory material for councils thinking about using deliberative approaches as part of a broader engagement strategy with community. It is focused on deliberative democracy, particularly as typified in citizen panels (or ‘juries’).
