The Local Government Act directs that councils play a critical role in encouraging and supporting active participation in civic life and ensuring that their delivery of services is both accessible and equitable. Councils are also required to act consistently within the framework of the Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities and are bound by statutes relating to equal opportunity.

Although the legal and social frameworks are in place, there is still a lot of work to do to support local governments to demonstrate diversity and inclusiveness across their culture and practice. The VLGA works with a range of stakeholders and member councils to support this work.  Many Victorian councils work very closely with their LGBTI communities and have achieved some great outcomes.  The VLGA has collected some of these stories and included them in the Rainbow Resource for Victorian Councils.  The stories are varied and inspiring and may help your council and your community to make further progress.

The VLGA is keen to support any member council wishing to increase engagement and civic participation with its LGBTI community. Please get in touch for more information.

Please note:

The VLGA Rainbow Resource for Local Government has been retracted as it has come to our attention that there are ambiguities within the document.  We apologise for any inconvenience that this retraction might present.  Once again, we thank those who contributed to the resource and acknowledge the good intent that sat behind its development.

The VLGA is committed to connecting communities and strengthening democracy
