Local government case studies on social and equity impacts of climate change

Liveable & Just Local Government Case Studies

The launch of the Liveable & Just Toolkit comprised a practical session aimed at assisting those present to make the toolkit a ‘live’ resource for local governments and community organisations.  Councillors, officers, and representatives of community organisations were guided through a step-by-step look at toolkit themes, content, and recommended resources.  The VLGA encourages managers to use the following powerpoint presentation to guide others in working with the toolkit and understanding the issues raised therein.
To add experience and insight to the session, the VLGA sought examples on where local government initiatives on reducing greenhouse gas emissions simultaneously addressed social and equity issues in the community.  Subsequently, the local governments of Darebin, Frankston, and Towong shared excellent examples of how council work around environment and sustainability can at once reinforce social justice and equity aspects of council activity, and vice versa.

The case studies ranged from looking at Municipal Public Health Plans, to projects such as home insulation for the elderly, and installation of hot-water systems for the socio-economically disadvantaged – demonstrating the depth and breadth of a changing climate’s impact on social and equity issues such as health and wellbeing, an ageing population, and socio-economic hardship.
