Membership


The Association has three Membership categories



  1. Elected Local Governments

  2. Community Groups

  3. Individual Citizens



Democratic Structure


The VLGA Board manages the business and affairs of the Association and sets and oversees policy on behalf of and in accordance with the wishes of the membership. It has the power to perform all such acts and things as appear to the Board to be essential for the proper management of the business and affairs of the Association.


The Board is elected for a two-year term at our February Strategic Meeting. All VLGA individual members, member community groups and Councillors from member Councils are eligible to vote.


The Board consists of the President, three Vice-Presidents, a Treasurer, the Executive Officer (ex-officio) and six ordinary members, two of whom shall be elected Councillors from member local governments. The President, Treasurer and two of the Vice Presidents shall be Councillors from member local governments.


The President, Vice Presidents, Treasurer, Public Officer with the Executive Officer comprise the Officer Bearers of the Association that between Board Meetings may act as an Executive, with the same powers as the Board.


    The VLGA Board has adopted these protocols regarding the Executive's roles;
  • Executive will not duplicate the work of the Board;

  • Executive remains accountable to Board and will report all decisions back to the Board;

  • Executive will determine on matters of significance only when issues are urgent in nature and cannot wait for decision until the next Board meeting;

  • Executive will monitor the activities of the Association between Board Meetings;

  • The President has authority to call an Executive meeting when required if there are sufficient matters of importance;

  • Executive Meetings will be scheduled between monthly Board meetings and will proceed only if required; and

  • Executive acknowledges the resourcing implications of meeting preparation, reporting and minute-taking.
