Local Government Working Group on Gambling


(Chair: Cr John Connor)
Primary Purpose:
To provide a network for local governments addressing these issues, consider the work of the VLGA Problem Gambling Advocate and Local, State and Federal Government policies and initiatives and to advise on possible VLGA Board actions

  • Effect of VCAT decisions

Timor-Leste Working Group


(Chair: Cr Gary Jungwirth)
Primary Purpose:
 To consider the work of the Friendship Groups and VLGA workers and to advise on possible VLGA Board actions
Current work:

  • Assistance to the framework of Friendship groups

  • Participation in observer presence at 2007 Timor elections

Councillor Rights and Remuneration Working Group


 (Chair: Cr David Vendy)
Primary Purpose:
To advise the Board on all issues to maximise remuneration and resources opportunities and outcomes for Councillors
 Current Work:

  • Promotion of the VLGA research "What Price Democracy"

  • The Remuneration panel progress

  • Superannuation

  • Change to election expenses tax deduction limit

  • Improvement of physical & equipment resources for Councillors

The Mayoral Chain

Primary Purposes:

  • The Mayoral Chain exists to provide a nurturing environment for qualified mayors

  • The Mayoral Chain provides an opportunity for members to contribute to good governance within the community.

  • The Mayoral Chain aims to promote and advance best practice good governance to all communities by providing assistance and advice to any party that it thinks appropriate.

Women's Policy Working Group


 (Convenor: Cr Janet Rice)
Background
At its meeting of 2 November 2006, the VLGA Board approved the creation of a Working Group to support the Board in developing a policy relating to women in local government.
The context includes the Victorian Local Government Women's Charter, the Victorian Centenary of Federation Women's Petition (2001) and other material such as Moving On (2003), research about why women Councillors retire from office. The internal context includes VLGA's role as WPILG Coalition Secretariat, creation of the Women's Policy position, carer friendly work environment, major signatory to the Women's Charter which has three principles: gender equity, diversity and active citizenship.
Role of the Working Group
The Working Group in drafting a women's policy for Board consideration will:

  • Undertake an audit of VLGA policy and practices and the external environment to establish the context

    •
  • Scope a draft policy

    •
  • Identify how to build maximum ownership of the policy

    •
  • Recommend a plan of action for the Board and members consideration

    •
  • Report on progress to the Members Planning day in February 2007.
