Background

The Mayoral Chain was established in September 2005 as an alumni group for Mayors who have completed the VLGA Essential Mayors Weekend. Its purpose is to retain and give value to the experience and expertise of VLGA-trained Mayors.

We know that Mayors have broad networks, with strong contacts in their communities and into other levels of government. Mayors have proven track records as practitioners of democratic governance and their experiences enhance their maturity as leaders. We believe that the success of many Mayors lies in the training they have sought out and participated in, particularly the VLGA Mayors Weekend. This experience and expertise must not be lost to communities and it is why the idea of the Mayoral Chain has now become a reality.

The areas that will be explored for possible engagement by the Mayoral Chain include:

  • Training of Mayors and Councillors

  • Mentoring of new Mayors

  • Providing opportunities for further professional development for members of the Mayoral Chain

  • Acting as a consultative voice on matters relating to local government, community strengthening and community building.
