The VLGA congratulates all Councillors elected in 2016 on reaching the halfway mark of their term.

Being a Councillor is a 24/7 job, but it comes with the reward of the trust of the community. Councillors, and especially Mayors, play significant leadership roles and set the strategic direction for and on behalf of their community.

Councils are complex operations, with typical budgets in the hundreds of millions of dollars for metropolitan councils, with each of Victoria’s 79 councils providing around 100 different services to their residents.

The VLGA is proud to support councils and councillors as a peak body for local government focussing particularly on the elements of effective governance.

We are encouraged by the record number of women who nominated for the 2016-2020 term. Women now make up 38 per cent of all Councillors in Victoria.

VLGA is proud to continue to support women leading up to the 2020 council elections and the Victorian Government’s goal of Councillor gender parity by 2025. A dedicated VLGA Facebook page has been established to support the 2020 campaign Local Women Leading Change.
